What does it mean for my child's platelets to be 529? Is this a problem?
I can try to help a bit. I'm a lab tech, but must say that I don't deal with a lot of pediatric patients. Usually the high end of the platelet range is 450,000. In young children sometimes it can be a bit higher. Since platelets have to do with clotting, it would go to reason that as long as they are "working properly" a very low platelet count could cause bleeding problems, while a higher platelet count could cause excessive clotting. Just looking at the numbers, it doesn't seem too extreme so I wouldn't panic. It could be caused by any number of reasons, including metabolic ones, medications, etc.

Here's some links you can look at:

http://www.emedicine.com/ped/topic2238.htm

The technical term is "Thrombocytosis". If you do a search for this term I'm sure that you will find a lot of useful info. Keep in mind that children's normal values can be different from adults normal values sometimes.
