Barclay James Harvest - Poor Man´s Moody Blues

Live at the Town and Country Club, London 02/16/1992 Notice: In the year 1994 I asked Justin Hayward, singer of the Moody Blues (Nights in white satin) in the Moody Blues Newsletter what he think about the song "Poor Man´s Moody Blues" of Barclay James Harvest. He answered: "It was interesting and I was flattered that they gave us credit that we had been an influence on them".

Living With Kidney Dialysis - Adam Richards StoryIs it true that doctors administer paralysing drugs and anesthesia to organ donors...?
I have included several links that answer your questions. This is all based on US procedures.

No, they don't have to use anesthesia.
No, the doctors cannot remove the ventilator, because if they were to do so, the organs would effectively be destroyed without blood circulation, and thus be useless for transplant.
Organ donation is highly regulated by an organization called UNOS (website www.unos.org). Doctors cannot simply take the organs; the patient must either have listed himself on a state donor registry or put it on his license/id, or his family must approve the donation of organs at the time of his death. Also, the doctors working on a patient are not the same doctors on the transplant team.

The donation surgery is almost exactly like regular surgery. Here is what my source says:
"Once the donor is in the operating room, the body is moved to the operating table. The body is prepared with a sterilizing scrub, sterile drapes are placed around the chest and abdomen, and the operation begins. There is an anesthesiologist present to monitor the blood pressure and fluids, although no anesthetic needs to be given since the person is already dead (and thus cannot feel pain). Up to five surgical teams may be present, sometimes operating simultaneously, along with scrub nurses, circulating nurses, and organ donation technicians who are responsible for getting the ice-cold preservation solutions ready to instill into the donor to cool and protect the donated organs when they are removed. The surgeons carefully inspect the donated organs, again making sure that they look acceptable for transplantation. Once the organs are removed, the ventilator is turned off and the incisions are closed. At this point, the body is sent to the hospital morgue and is released to the funeral home." (See my source below)

It's very sad that people find it necessary to put such incorrect information on the web. That may be why people don't donate. I still can't forget the story of a 3 year old girl who died waiting for a heart. I know there was a heart somewhere for that little girl, but I guess no one else cared. I think it would bring some comfort to a grieving family to know that their child's organs saved another child's life.

I received a kidney and pancreas in 2005 from a 14 year old. I do some volunteer work promoting organ donation with groups like Donate Life. I hope you'll help to get the truth out! I'm glad that you cared enough to ask this question.
