Is this Organ Donor myth true?
It's true that they have to harvest the organs before they start to decay so, technically, the person is still alive on life support although they are brain dead and the essence of made them who they were is gone.
Yes, they can use your corneas to give people back their sight, which is a great gift. I am a bit uncertain about my eyes being used but I suppose I wouldn't be needing them if I'm dead so they might as well go to someone who did need them. However, if you're still unsure, you can obtain an organ card and specify that you don't want your eyes being taken. No, they won't take your eyes. Our medical technology hasn't found a way to successfully transplant eyes.Hi Tyger - well it's sort of true...
The organs do have to be harvested quickly to prevent tissue damage. They'll take whatever healthy organs they can to help as many people as they can with your courageous and generous gift. (This doesnt include the whole eye, but does include the corneas.)
If you've donated your body to science (not just your organs) then your organs would be harvested first and the rest of your tissues would also be utilized for any number of possible studies.
All of the people working with cadavers/donated tissue are really respectful of the donor. There are strict protocols in place to ensure that unused tissue is appropriately collected and stored. After a period of time (differs from city to city... 5 years in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. 2 years in Edmonton, Alberta Canada.) Anyway - after that period has lapsed, your cremated remains will be returned to your family for final interment. OR your next of kin may be requested to sign a release for another extended period of time (which they are fully within their rights to deny.)Your corneal tissue are on the list of tissues that are recovered, but if you didn't want them to recover them, then you just have to specify that to your parents (for now) and/or on your registry.
