What causes you to bleed on a period?
your uterus is shedding it's lining.Placenta and blood and tissue.Your body prepares for pregnancy every single month. Early in the month you produce hormones and start preparing a nutrient rich lining of your uterus (blood is the nutrient delivery system) that would be a nice place for a fertilized egg to attach and grow. This continues as you lead up to ovulation.

Once you've ovulated the body continues to build this lining in hopes that the fertilized egg will attach. When it doesn't (and there would be many hormones telling your body it had), then the body sheds this lining (your period) and starts to get ready for next month!

I gave the other answer the thumbs down because there is no placenta unless there is a pregnancy.

good luck!
