Quality Of Mercy

When one of Earth's best fighter pilots is taken as a prisoner in the intergalactic wars, he makes the fateful decision to save himself and a woman who is undergoing a painful and hideous transformation.

Do you think early termination of people with genetic deffects yields better overall fitness in a few milenia?
I think you sound like Hitler.in a few milenia yes, but not all mileniaThat's a great idea Hitler!!! so are you gonna decide what characteristics classify a person as a weakling? I say let's toss out the ones that cannot seem to spell as simple word as "afraid" first. Spelling should be perfect and considered a defect if not done right!Whoa, you tackled a risky one there and will probably get some interesting answers.

I will say that I am concerned in that modern science has made it possible for many to live in spite of genetic traits that can continue to be passed down to other generations. In days gone by, the less healthy did not usually make it to the age in life to procreate and so there was a natural termination to many of the genetic problems.
Now in the modern world, our morals and values have to enter in and whether we could with good conscience do what nature once did is debatable.
FYI...I would have been one of those that was buried beside the Oregon trail with the epitaph...because of her delicate constitution, she did not make it.
Antibiotics have saved my life at least 4 times to date.We have seen that natural selection brings about an individual in a species with the greatest capability of coping within the environment in which it resides. With our advances in medicine and technology we have reduced the impact of natural selection on the human species. If we were to replace that with scientific selection, we could improve the genetic survivability of the human race much quicker then natural selection would be capable of. To do this, we need not "terminate" and individual. It is only necessary that we keep their genes from re-entering the population.
Taking only a scientific and logical standpoint, ignoring all humanitarian aspects, this should be done sooner, rather then later due to the increased drug resistance of many forms of bacteria and viruses that have the potential to cause global pandemics.
